Give Your Smile a Boost with Veneers

“Smile, it is the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart.” — Anthony J. D’Angelo

There is no denying the beauty of a big, bright smile. Increasing your level of self-confidence, a smile is one of the first characteristics people notice when meeting someone new.

Unfortunately, the research has shown that approximately one-third of Americans are unhappy with their smile. After surveying 1,000 U.S. adults, 36 percent said that they believe they would have a better social life if they had better teeth.

In fact, among those who were between 18-24 years of age, 48 percent said that they had untagged a picture of themselves on Facebook because they didn’t like their smile.

Can you relate? If so, know that veneers can do wonders for your smile!

What Are Veneers And What Can They Fix?

Being a very common and popular procedure, veneers can address a wide range of cosmetic issues. Made of either porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin, this custom-made “shell” is then permanently adhered to the front surface of your tooth.

Veneers are incredibly natural looking, helping you instantly achieve a more confident, vibrant smile. Although many seek veneers due to discolored teeth, they can also fix:

  • Teeth that are worn down
  • Teeth that are broken, chipped or uneven
  • Crooked or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Teeth that have gaps

Best of all, they last. One study, published in the International Journal of Prosthodontics, found that 93.5 percent of veneers lasted over tens years, with 82.93 percent lasting 20 years. The most significant issues associated with the longevity of porcelain veneers was linked to bruxism — while discoloration was influenced by smoking.

Overall, veneers offer a wide range of benefits. They are stain-resistant, will not irritate your gums, and they do not require any special attention or care.

They also:

  • Instantly whiten your smile, boosting your self-esteem
  • Look like real teeth — no one will be able to tell that you have veneers
  • Fix a wide range of cosmetic issues that negatively impact your self-confidence
  • Replace damaged enamel, which often leads to significant discoloration
  • Do not tend to crack, in comparison to say dental bonding
In terms of limitations, the main concern that people have is the initial cost. However, veneers are an investment. Lasting between one and two decades, you will enjoy boosted self-confidence for years to come — and that is priceless.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

Before you undergo the procedure, you will first need to book a consultation with your dentist. This will help your dentist determine whether or not you’re an ideal candidate, as veneers are not intended for every circumstance.

Typically ideal for resolving minor issues, your dentist may suggest other options first if, for instance, there are signs of advanced decay or if a root canal is needed. However, if your dentist decides that veneers are an ideal solution, you will then book a prep appointment.

During this appointment, a thin layer of enamel will be removed for your teeth (which will be about the same thickness as the veneers), then the dentist will make an impression of your teeth so that they can order your custom-made veneers. Before you leave, temporary veneers will be put on.

At your final appointment, your permanent veneers will be bonded to your teeth. Any and all of the excess bonding will be removed before making final adjustments. The procedure itself is practically pain-free and when it is all said and done, you will enjoy a stunning smile that you’re proud to show off.

How Do I Care for My Veneers?

As stated above, your veneers do not require any additional treatment. Simply clean them as you would your regular teeth. In order to maintain positive oral health, it is recommended that you floss at least once daily and brush 2-3 times daily with a fluoride toothpaste.

This will ensure that all food debris and bacteria are removed, reducing your risk of cavities and gum disease — while ensuring that your veneers remain white and vibrant. The key is maintaining positive oral health, as receding gums could place your veneers at risk, not to mention your dental health.

Since bruxism increases your risk of future complications, it is important that you address this problem as soon as possible. You should discuss your options with your dentist and invest in a custom-made mouthguard. You can read about the benefits associated with a professionally fitted mouthguard here.

Although incredibly durable, do not chew on anything overly hard, such as pens — and when it comes to foods like nuts or pretzels, chew with your back teeth. It is also recommended that you visit your dentist regularly. During these visits, you can discuss veneer care in greater detail based on any concerns you may have.
