Dental Health Resolutions

Dental Health

Dental Health | It won’t be long before 2022 arrives. Many people use this as an opportunity to “take out the trash” and inaugurate some new traditions. But don’t neglect healthcare when you make a New Year’s resolution, specifically oral care.

Whatever it is you’ve been putting off, whether it’s a professional teeth whitening treatment, dental veneers, or just your basic dental exam and cleaning appointment, now is the perfect time to explore some ways to take your dental health and smile to the next level.

Stop Smoking to Improve Dental Health

No one ever said that quitting smoking would be easy. But it would definitely be easier on your health, not to mention your teeth and smile. There are numerous free online programs and systems available to help you quit this dangerous habit. Your family, friends, and teeth will thank you!

Schedule a Dental Cleaning

The dental cleaning appointment is one of the most neglected types of dental visits. As boring as it may sound, this type of professional cleaning helps to remove the cause of gum disease: plaque. Plus, it’s an easy way to improve your Dental Health.

A dental exam normally precedes a dental cleaning, allowing your dental hygienist a chance to check for any signs of trouble with your teeth, mouth and gums. Next, they will use specialized dental tools to carefully remove any plaque from on and around your teeth to prevent the development of gum disease.

Replace Your Toothbrush

Have you looked at your toothbrush lately? When was the last time that you replaced it? Like anything else, toothbrushes experience wear and tear over time. If your toothbrush has frayed bristles, or it’s been longer than three months since you put it into use, go ahead and replace it so that it can do its job of cleaning your teeth.

On Brushing and Flossing

The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. This helps ensure that plaque has a more difficult time sticking to your teeth and causing gum disease.

If you’re ever away from home and eating a meal or snack, you obviously won’t have access to your toothbrush unless you commonly travel with it. Don’t give oral bacteria a head start. Make sure that you at least rinse your mouth out with water after you eat or drink to loosen food particles and keep sugars from lingering in your mouth to feed oral bacteria.

You can also do the following to improve your Dental Health:

  • Limit your consumption of sugary drinks and snacks
  • Avoid biting down on hard objects like ice or chewing your nails
  • Eat a well-balanced diet that promotes healthy gums
