Halloween is all fun and free candy until you become a mom, or a dentist, and see the harmful effects of overindulgent sugar eaters. Candy consumption is manageable for most of the year, but Halloween can become a challenge. The following is a guide for those of us who are looking for Halloween treats which are less damaging to your teeth than others.
Halloween Candy considered less damaging:
- Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies can stimulate saliva and prevent dry mouth. A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth, which can lead to an increased risk of cavities.
- Sugar-free chewing gum can actually prevent cavities, not only will it help dislodge food particles from between the teeth, it will also increase saliva production in your mouth. Saliva works to neutralize the acids, caused by food, in your mouth and prevent tooth decay.
- Dark Chocolates are loaded with sugar, but some studies have shown that the antioxidants in dark chocolate can be good for the heart and may even lower blood pressure. As always, be sure to eat chocolate and all foods in moderation.
Halloween Candy to watch out for:
- Candy corn, cake and cookies can contain a high amount of sugar which may cause tooth decay.
- Gummy candy, taffy and even dried fruit are a potential source of tooth decay particularly when they get stuck between teeth making it impossible for saliva to neutralize and clear away.
- Sour candies are known to have high acid levels which can break down tooth enamel faster than saliva can neutralize it.
Not all sugary sweets are created equal or are equally scary. Just remember that when it comes to sugar and its effects on your teeth, time is of the essence.
