Protect Your Child’s Smile

Cavities and gum disease are concerns for many parents. That’s why protecting your child’s teeth is essential. As children return to school and the holiday festivities are soon amongst us, it’s important for your child to maintain healthy dental care routines.

Learn how you can protect your child from dental health issues below.

Make It A Routine

Habits, good and bad, form with repetition. Therefore, you can help your child learn healthy dental care habits with a routine. Be consistent, too. Special occasions, for instance, can affect a child’s dental care routine. We advise that they maintain normal teeth brushing and flossing every day.

It’s best to make teeth brushing the first part of their morning and evening routines. If you have small children, they may find it fun to brush their teeth with you! Also, you can purchase toothbrushes designed for children. Some play music or have lights and bright colors, making tooth brushing a fun event!

Limit Candy and Sugary Beverages

Children eat what they have access to. We recommend limiting candy and sugary beverages from their diet. Encourage them to drink plenty of water and teach them why sweets are not good for teeth. Education goes a long way, especially as they mature.

During special occasions, sweets should be limited and followed with thorough tooth brushing to prevent dental health issues. Refrain from hard and very sticky candies as they can damage or loosen a tooth.

Consult with Your Dentist

Your dentist is the best professional to learn how to protect your child’s teeth. Upon examination, your dentist will advise you on recommended treatments to protect/restore your child’s teeth and gums.

Take Notice of Your Child’s Teeth and Gums

Visually inspect your child’s teeth every two weeks. You’ll want to check for discoloration, dark and white spots, and red/swollen gums. These are signs of a possible underlying issue. It’s always recommended to notify your dentist should you see a change in your child’s dental health.

Maintain Your Child’s Dental Visits

It’s recommended that children begin visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth emerges or by their first birthday. This is to instill dental health routines and learn how to best care for your child’s teeth. Be sure to maintain their dental exams and cleanings. These preventive procedures detect issues early on while preventing new ones.
