Our Worcester MA Dentists recommend Flossing as an integral part of your dental health maintenance.

Two Flossing Options – Multi or Mono

When it comes to flossing options, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you floss at least once a day to help remove plaque from the areas between your teeth which your toothbrush may not be able to reach. Plaque which is not removed by brushing can eventually harden and cause cavities and gum disease. With so many flossing products available to you, which do you choose?

When purchasing any dental product, look for those products which contain the ‘ADA Seal of Acceptance’. This will ensure that the product has been evaluated for safety and effectiveness by the ADA. Advertised flossing products include, nylon floss, monofilament floss, dental picks, pre-threaded flossers, water flossers and tooth picks, to name a few. For this article we are going to concentrate on nylon, multifilament, floss and monofilament floss.

  1. Nylon, or multifilament, floss is composed of multiple nylon strands, available in a variety of flavors and can be either waxed or unwaxed. Although nylon floss is relatively inexpensive, it tends to tear or shred between the teeth sometimes leaving loose threads between the teeth.
  2. Monofilament floss, while more expensive, is a single filament that slides easily between the teeth and is virtually tear or shred resistant

When used properly, both types of floss are excellent for removing plaque and debris from between your teeth. We recommend that you discuss flossing options with your Dentist. Every set of teeth is as individual as a personal lifestyle, so it is important that you talk with your dentist to discover the best flossing products and technique available to you that meet your individual dental needs.

Happy Flossing.
